5 Blepharoplasty Surgery Myths Unmasked

A blepharoplasty is a simple plastic surgery procedure that targets excess skin and fatty deposits in the upper and lower eyelids to reveal more youthful, rejuvenated eyes. The procedure, which is commonly referred to as an eyelid surgery, or an eyelid lift surgery, is a great fit for anyone who has and/or is self-conscious about permanent bags under the eyes, excess eyelid skin, a tired or drooping gaze.

Unfortunately, the procedure carries a few myths and misconceptions that often dissuade people from even considering the option. That is why we wanted to take some time to lay out these myths so that we can dispel them once and for all...hopefully!

Myth #1: Blepharoplasty Surgery Is Only A Cosmetic Procedure

While many people certainly do get eyelid lift surgery for its cosmetic appeals, such as rejuvenation and confidence-boosting, this plastic surgery procedure is also done for medical reasons. For example, people diagnosed with ptosis suffer from severely drooping eyelids which may affect just one or both of their eyes. In these cases, a blepharoplasty surgery is considered a medical treatment and may even be covered by medical insurance.

Myth #2: Blepharoplasty Surgery Leaves Ugly Scars

Aside from what some celebrities may have us believe, plastic surgery procedures are meant to look natural, which means that the incision scars must also be discrete or indistinguishable. At our plastic surgery clinic in Orlando, our eyelid surgery incisions are done on the eyelid crease, making them virtually undetectable once fully healed.

Myth #3: Blepharoplasty Surgery Can Correct Sagging Eyebrows & Crows Feet

An eyelid lift surgery can fix drooping eyelids and even puffy lower lids, as well as baggy under-eyes, which will itself get rid of many of the wrinkles around the eyes. The procedure, though, will not fix sagging eyebrows and crows feet. If these are areas that a patient would like addressed, then Dr. Z will likely recommend combining the procedure with a Brow Lift and using dermal fillers like Botox and Dysport to smooth out the fine lines causing the crows feet.

Myth #4: Blepharoplasty Surgery Will Give You Chronic Dry Eyes.

This is a big misconception that we'd like to rectify right now. While there are small risks associated with any surgery, a blepharoplasty causing chronic dry eyes is extremely rare and only occurs if the plastic surgeon removes too much skin from the upper eyelids. To ensure this doesn't happen, be sure to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who has had extra years of specialization in plastic surgery and eyelid surgery.

Myth #5: Blepharoplasty Surgery Is Expensive

According to the American Board of Plastic Surgery, most eyelid lift surgeries range between $3K to $6K depending on the facility and the surgeon among other factors. While this may seem like a lot, our plastic surgery clinic in Orlando offers up to 4 different financing options to help patients pay for their procedure.

More Information

Now that the information is out there, we hope that anyone considering a blepharoplasty surgery is more willing to make the choice to do so! All plastic surgeries should require careful consideration and planning to ensure it is something that's definitely needed, wanted, and a good fit for that person. If you would like to have a consultation with our Orlando board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Z, feel free to book an appointment today.
