What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes the swelling of breast tissue in males. Most people don’t think about guys having breasts like women do, but all humans (female AND male) are born with at least a small amount of breast tissue. Breasts typically don’t develop the same way in males as they do in females, but patients who have gynecomastia experience abnormal enlargement of their glandular breast tissue - i.e. “man boobs”. 

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is most commonly caused by hormonal imbalances, such as below average levels of testosterone or increased estrogen production in men. There are a number of other things that can cause gynecomastia, however, including:

• Injury/diseases affecting the testicles

• Hyperthyroidism

• Obesity

• Medications 

• Kidney failure

• Tissue Excision for Gynecomastia: Severe cases of gynecomastia or patients with stretched or sagging skin typically require this approach. Tissue excision enables Dr. Z to extra more fatty tissue than liposuction would allow. Depending on the extent of your surgery, incisions will usually be placed around the areola or under your pectoral crease.
