Often times a patient’s biggest fear is mishandling their post-op recovery due to being misinformed. Everyone wants to have a healthy route to recovery, especially after undergoing a facial procedure such as a rhinoplasty. Most patients understand that a rhinoplasty can cause swelling, bruising, and general discomfort which can last up to two weeks following the procedure. So, what can you do to ensure you’re doing everything in your power to create the best rhinoplasty recovery?
While performing the rhinoplasty is in the hands of your plastic surgeon, making sure your rhinoplasty recover is handled properly is entirely up to you. Here are some helpful tips to ensure that your rhinoplasty recovery runs according to plan.
Use a saline solution for your nasal passages for the first few days after your procedure. A saline spray will help keep your nasal area from crusting or drying out which can cause damage to your healing bones and cartilage.
The first 48 hours after a rhinoplasty you will be at your worst in terms of bruising and swelling. To combat any discomfort, place cold compresses or an ice pack on your cheeks to help bring the swelling down. Do not put on your nose itself as this may cause damage.
An unusual, but certainly helpful tip is to eat a good amount of pineapple. Pineapple has a chemical called bromelain which helps to alleviate pain and inflammation. The best way to absorb the bromelain is to juice the core of the pineapple and drink it.
While this may seem obvious, sneezing or blow your nose while recovering from a Rhinoplasty can cause bleeding in your nasal cavities. A helpful trick to stop a sneeze is to pinch the space between your eyebrows. It halts the sneeze and saves you from any pain.
Taking a week off of work or from strenuous activities is highly recommended following a Rhinoplasty surgery. By taking time to yourself and getting as much rest as possible you will heal faster, and most importantly, safer.
The sun can cause redness and itchiness when recovering so it is best to stay out of direct sunlight for the first few days.
This step is the easiest one of all - talk to your doctor. The plastic surgeon who performed your surgery can provide helpful tips and suggestions in order to achieve a smooth, healthy Rhinoplasty recovery.
The road to rhinoplasty recovery can be congested just like your nose may feel, but these helpful tips can lead the way to a successful healing process.
