What You Should Know About Facelifts

We can’t avoid aging, but there are ways to make it look we turned back the hands of time. Sagging, wrinkled skin on the face and neck is one of the more common signs of aging. A cosmetic surgery procedure called the facelift aims to smooth and rejuvenate the face and neck, providing a more youthful, refreshed look. Facelifts are one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available, but should you get one?

What is a facelift?

A facelift—also known in the medical community as rhytidectomy—is a surgical procedure that works to correct signs of aging in the face and neck. Facelift surgery does exactly as the name suggests: it firms and lifts sagging skin around the face and neck.

What does a facelift treat?

As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity. As that occurs, the skin may form unwanted “jowls” along the face. A facelift is the most comprehensive and effective procedure for improving the look of facial wrinkles and sagging skin. Facelift surgery helps people “turn back the clock” more so than with any other procedure or aging treatment of the face.

Types of Facelift Incisions

There are different incisions that your plastic surgeon may use during your facelift, depending on your unique goals for a facelift as well as the shape of your face.

  • Traditional Facelift: Your surgeon will make an incision at the base of your temples, following your hairline and going around the back of your ears into your lower hairline during the procedure.

  • Limited Incision or Mini Facelift: Your surgeon will make a few smaller incisions at the base of the temple, around the ears, and in your lower hairline.

  • Neck Lift: In this method, your surgeon will create incisions at the front of your ears, around the back, and into the lower hairline.

Facelift Recovery

After your facelift procedure, you face is dressed in a wrap to provide your face with support for healing. It’s normal to experience some swelling after the procedure, but it should subside within a few days. Most patients are able to return to work in a week or two, depending on their occupation. Your facelift surgeon will talk to you about your recovery plan depending on the extent of your surgery. Everyone’s healing process is unique. It’s important to adhere to your instructions for post-op care.
